We ate in the pub at Bunessan in 1985 after I did my last Munro. As a celebratory meal went, deep fried whatever straight out of the freezer was maybe not just ideal. Never been back since.

However, it must have improved in 24 years. Musn't it?

The Reef Restaurant is located in the centre of Bunessan village. Look out for the dark blue building. The Reef specializes in fresh local seafood in the evenings along with a day time menu during the day. The Reef is owned by Donald Cameron, one of the local fisherman and its Chef is Phil - we have dined here on several occasions since it opened in 2005 and have always enjoyed our meals; we are constantly surprised and delighted by the different offerings served up by Phil and his team and never disappointed. Reservations recommended during the summer months. Also highly recommended is the takeaway fish and chips!!

If you like cruising in company and Bunessan is an essential stopping point why not join the Round the Mull Race at the beginning of July? Friday afternoon - Oban to Tobermory then party; Saturday - sail round to Bunessan, have a ceilidh; Sunday - back to Oban or wherever.

The food has improved. However I miss the wee bar at the side, which I always preferred to the Argyll's lounge. Had a great atmosphere, especially in winter or in foul weather. I think it fell foul of the environmental standards enforcers during Argyll's sojourn in Strathclyde.

I remember being in a really wee bar somewhere down that part of Mull about 30 years ago. When I say "wee" I mean "Really Wee". I don't think you could have got more than 4 of 5 people in at any one time. I think it may have been the smallest bar in Scotland at the time.

You'd get about a dozen in there relatively safely, but the darts board could be a prob. Also, the collie dugs didn't like being stepped on. It was run by Anda Campbell at that time - good accordion player.

The redoubtable NICK suggests that the first direction should be South as that would seem to be the general direction of the morning tide

We could therefore re-attempt the cruise of 06 where we ended up rescuing Shard from the deeps around Colonsay. Iona was the original destination then so that could easily become Bunessan. Just have to see what weather prevails around the Ross of Mull on the day.

I had thought of a revisit to Gigha and then perhaps Port Ellen - again a strong SW would possibly ruin this intention - what the hell - there's plenty to go at!
