Hello again,
Sorry for the missing forecast last week. My PhD looms large (the Viva is tomorrow, wish me luck!) and things got delayed. My apologies.
A couple of items for you this week. If you know of anyone doing an Atlantic Crossing let them know that 5-day forecasts are now available free of charge (although donations are always welcome), and updated three times-a-day at http://www.weatherweb.net/index_files/sailing.htm
Secondly, the 30-day forecast has been updated today at Weatherweb.TV which takes us tantalisingly close to Christmas. You can watch this forecast, and the rest of the forecasts (updated throughout the weekend) by going to http://www.weatherweb.tv Remember, your feedback about Weatherweb.TV and any suggestions for improvements are always welcome. Also, there is a new video available on the Learning Channel.
Onto the weekend forecast though, and if you know anyone who’d like to receive this email each week just tell them to send a request to join to sailingweather-subscribe@weatherweb.net
Best wishes,
Simon
WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST
Issued: 1000 Thursday 20th November 2008
SATURDAY:
A ridge of high pressure is expected to be building through Ireland and western parts of the United Kingdom through Saturday. At the same time a bitter, unstable Arctic airstreams will be affecting eastern parts of England and Scotland, although this weakens as the day progresses. During the afternoon a warm front will be pushing east through Ireland, before reaching western Scotland by the evening.
Frequent sleet and snow showers, some of them heavy will be affecting the east of Scotland and eastern parts of England, extending as far west as the eastern Midlands. These could lead to a veering of snow in places, especially as the trough moves south.
For more western parts of Scotland, England and Wales the day is likely to be largely fair, after patchy, showery rain associated with cold front moves away into the Irish Sea.
At the same time the warm front will be bringing cloud and some periods of rain through Ireland, this reaching western Scotland by the later afternoon.
Winds will be NE 15-20 occ 30kt (F5 gust F7) in the east, but easing later, mainly NW 12-16kt (F4-F5) in the west, with NW 5-10kt (F3) over Ireland.
SUNDAY:
A series of fronts spread eastwards through the British Isles and Ireland overnight into Sunday. Following will be a fresh to strong northwesterly airflow. This flow will be unstable with troughs moving southeastwards through the day. Note that there is a risk that the cold front could become slow moving over southern England for a time, delaying the clearance of rain.
A wet and windy start to the morning for much of East Anglia, the Midlands and southern England with the chance of some heavy periods of rain. Further rain will be affecting much of northern and western Scotland, with showers merging to longer spells of rain over Ireland. The rain falling as snow over the Highlands and Grampians leading to blizzard conditions here.
The afternoon is going to be breezy and cold everywhere. Rain should clear the south to be followed by a few showers, although there is still the risk of it lingering on in the far south for much of the afternoon. The heaviest of the showers will be in northern and western areas where there is also the chance of thunderstorms and some of the showers being wintry.
Winds will become NW 20-30kt (F6-F7) behind the front, and ahead of it winds could gust to 40 or 50kt (F8-F10 in exposed places).
