He took the oars: that TCM,
Who now doth crazy go,
Laugh'd loud and long, and all the while
His eyes went to and fro,
"Ha! ha!" quoth he -- "full plain I see,
"Claysie kens how to row."

Twas down there by the Doldrums
This story did unfold
The ink black night and oily sea combined in darkness bold
Only the sound of the stroking oar in the rowlock broke the spell
Of nothing heard and nothing seen and nothing there but hell.

He dropped his kecks
And strolled the decks
His crew were near demented.
But Claymore knew a thing or two;
His grundies were sweetly scented.

.
Worthy of the great McGonagill hisself . . . but 'grundies' doesnae scan, suggest replacement with 'drawers' 'pants' or 'skids'
This could run and run and may well end up in our
Sea Poetry section as a narrative epic . . .
Not off round the Mull this weekend then?

"Outlook: 0700 Sun 19 Oct 0700 Mon 20 Oct
Wind South or southwest 7 to severe gale 9, perhaps storm 10 later."
What do you think?

In sic a warld o' financial crisis
Ilka thocht o' men an' mice is,
To seek that sanctuary o' the word
An' mak their rhymes; how absurd.
But poetry is a weekday toil
And ne'er their weekend will spoil;
So, fae their rhymes they dinnae shirk,
As lang as they're peyed - tae be at wark.

I bought a book of poetry by the great William Topaz in Fort William once. I was given a very strange look by the shopkeeper and banned from reading it out loud amongst friends.

Dear Heart has banned all readings of the works of Robert Service. One mention of the boys "whooping it up in the Malamute saloon" brings on hissy fits
