Silkie; I was never able to find out which language. My best guess is perhaps Greek. I was told it is the same root as argent for silver. The key is probably in which language has -hiro or -iro as a feminine diminutive, but I don't know that! Most latin based languages have feminine diminutives ending in -a rather than -o, but maybe I am too influenced by Spanish!
