What do you think of the proposals in this post?

Proposed new structure / number of forums etc

Post by Nick »

.
A couple of people have expressed the opinion that there are now too many fora and that less categories would be better.

I think the new Weather forum is important from the point of view of keeping Simon's forecasts separate, so it is going to stay for now and we will see how it goes.

As for the others - they all get posts, but I am looking to reduce the number. What I am thinking of doing is:

~ Moving the YotBlog forums elsewhere - they were added on specifically to cater for YotBlog users, so are not strictly part of BlueMoment. This is not really how it has worked out so I think they will go, possibly to another completely separate forum with its own YotBlog identity

~ Getting rid of 'Messing About in Boats' as I think this can be covered by Shooting the Breeze

~ Leaving the others, but moving Press Releases to the bottom of the pile

This would leave things looking like this:

Shooting the Breeze
Passages and Places
Gear and Gadgets
Tip of the Week
-----------------------------
Weatherman
WeatherChat
-----------------------------
Press Releases
-----------------------------
Site News
Suggestions Comments Bug Reports

I don't think that is too many, and I DO think putting all the posts into one forum would be a mistake as I do anticipate traffic growing considerably as time goes on. I don't want to see posts disappearing off the bottom of the page in less than a day, as happens on YBW.

The Gear and Gadgets forum in particular I would like to see used more often. On YBW people have frequently suggested a forum specifically for reviews and reports on sailing gear, but I suspect YBW have shied away from it because of legal worries. I don't care so much (or not at the moment anyway) and would like to see people writing mini-reviews for this section.

I am also thinking about the lavish prizes for the Tip of the Week . . . not sure what to offer, but I was thinking of commissioning a BlueMoment burgee and offering them as prizes - what do you reckon?

Am posting this as a new thread with a poll so people can give their opinions, but this isn't really a democracy :) aso unless there are very strong and unanimous opinions to the contrary the above will be the new structure of these fora just as soon as I find the time to set the YotBlog forum up as a separate entity. (In the meantime I may move it to the very bottom of the heap).

Nick, no problems with the above suggestion, but it would be interesting to know where YotBlog might end up.

Wait a minute, that's why I got fed up of TOP, not to mention Gay Rights, Etc Etc.

I think you've got it about right Nick, but I'm sure you won't be able to please all of the people all of the time.

.. still to many, as you asked, on the basis that Tip of the week could be part of gear and gadgets. Then I realised that not all tips are to do with gear, so maybe its about right after all.

Wouldnt worry too much about the prizes though - i think the novelty will wear off for both us and you, quite quickly.

Your proposal is for "fewer" categories, not "less". Also there's no pedantry icon.

N&K can go on hold until our next trip . . .

The others may yet come into their own, so I will leave them.

Too few forums, or too many?

Who cares? I really cannot be bothered with this perpetual debate that clutters up every board.

Can we have a forum to discuss which forums we need? Please?

It's about right.

Don't the topics sort of get so popular it's worth starting a forum to keep them together? An ongoing mutation/development kind of thing. Some will inevitably shrivel and die too.
