Soft eye

Not so much a tip, just the way I make an eye since I don't have the fids, I can't splice braid anyway and it's used rope (which I understand is much harder to work with) as I'm end-for-ending my halyards and lifts.

Image

The eye is formed and the two parts stitched together with whipping twine, working away from the eye. The end of the lift (in this case) is tapered from about 2/3 of the length of the whipping by thinning the core in a couple of steps until the last few millimetres are cover only.

Then stitch about halfway back to the eye before bringing the twine back out leaving a short tail. Next take the reel end of the twine and start whipping away from the eye. Finish by stitching through the rope a few times and take the end of the twine up through the core for a couple of inches.

Will it do?
