We had a good weekend preping the boat to go in the water.

We came home making lists and working out what holiday to book and generally getting all excited about being afloat and sailing away into the sunset.

The yard just rang, they have dropped the mast and it's in two parts. Bummer.

Bummer right enough.

Still, look on the bright side- happy new mast!

(how long did you give them to have it dressed and fitted??)

The first try at a fix is to get it sleved. How they will get the right section for a 1979 mast is another matter.

I'll not complain if we do end up with a new mast so long as we don't get shafted for betterment.

I asked for it to be ready on Friday. When we left Sunday afternoon they were talking about launching on Wednesday, I said OK do it to fit in with your workloads so long as I don't have to pay for an afloat berth untill Friday.

A new mast is on order, 5 or 6 weeks delivery.

Not your claim so no issue of betterment. No skin off the yards nose so new standing and running rigging which will cost them less than stripping the original

I've just been to view the damage but couldn't find it - they must have the bits inside somewhere.

It was there this afternoon.

If you stand under the bow of Chiron and look out over the marina, then the mast is lying off to your left, alongside a pontoon which is ashore.

I would like my brand new dynema main halyard back, it's never been used, not even to support the mast untill the forestay was fitted.

I wasn't so bothered about the boy's toys but did think that 'Cherry Red' might have been scarred.

It seems that the yard parks the trailer in front of the boat, loads the trailer and then rigs the mast in that new position which is clear of other boats. This is what they told me this afternoon though when they stepped 'Mistral' she had a boat in front and another to one side but maybe that was because I wanted the mast stepped a couple of days before launch.

Obviously, I'm sorry to hear about all this and hope that it all goes well.

Do you want someone ( Pete or me ) to strip off the dynema? and maybe the new SaltyJohn antenna too? What about the coax?

Maybe the halyard would be an idea.

I'll talk to the office and see if they are going to swap everything over before the rest gets stripped. Thanks for the offer, it makes me realise I live in the wrong place.

Where is the boat and who is goong to be carrying out the work?
I do hope it is all sorted in 6 wks
If it is a modern mast you may need a new boom to match.

I'm sure that Bob will be interested in your experience.

I suppose that a new mast will mean a new boom and standing rigging too - it's the other bits - lights, cables, antenna, furling, etc - do they have to be ( can they be ) transferred and by whom. Will the sails fit?

Really everything should be as per the old mast was when they lifted it.
in my case the original type mast was unavailable hence all new gear, uneconomical to alter old boom to fit new mast.
My tricolour was damaged so renewed too likewise new coaxial and antenna, all new rigging new r reefing systen (811S) new halyards reefing lines and topping lift.
Unless your running rigging was damaged it probably wont be replaced.
Best take an inventory of all items and note damaget items,also take pics of everuthing.
The old mast any anything else needing replaced belongs to the paying insurance company but u can ask them if they want you to dispose of it, (scrap!).
carry out a thorough inspection of completed job if it is a local rigger who carries out the work! Pay particular attention to split pins and roller foil section assembly screws, mine all came loose and
