Not boaty at all, but thought I'd share my grief with you at the passing of the Renfield Street Odeon. Saw Duke Ellington there.....

I had only thought of it as a multi screen cinema and didn't realise it was that old or was once a concert hall. I saw "Gandhi" and Pink Floyd's "The Wall" at the Odeon (The Wall may have been at La Scala on Sauchiehall Street). The Glasgow haunts of my youth are nearly all gone now from late 1970s to mid 1980s. The demise of the Glasgow Apollo was particularly sad. Such is life, onwards and upwards.

Sorry to see so much of Glasgow changing, I got lost there a couple of weeks ago due to not recognising anything.

I never went to the Apollo, not my neck of the woods so to speak, but would have loved to.

I think it was Green's Playhouse that screened Jazz on a Summer's Day when first shown in Glasgow.

No, because the youthful past can never be experienced as a youth again. However, there are always new things to do which may be feel just as good as those youthful experiences. Anyway, what is nostalgia, the past when one is 50, 70 or 90?

Ahhhh for those who know I was just old enough to sneak into 'Clouds' on a Sunday night. I do remember seeing Silk play there - well before they found fame as Ultravox.

Really enjoyed that. Thanks Donald. A broad church this jazz; from Bach to Berry via The Lord's Prayer.

They also screened Woodstock which I saw one wet afternoon in 19mumblemumble.

In my defence, I should point out that my Dad took me.

Great piece of film though. That was the first time I'd heard Blue Monk and realised that Thelonious Monk really could swing. Watching that amazing and stunning performance by Anita O'Day, it's hard to believe that she passed away some years ago at the age of 87.

I'd guess that Chico Hamilton and Chuck Berry must be about the film's only performers who are still alive.

The Comets played a full UK tour, I have shown the group above just show when he was at the Odeon. I remember their first number. With the curtains closed Bill began "On you marks, get set" and as the curtains opened " Everbody Razzle Dazzle! Rock and Roll had arrived in UK with Bill Haleys "Rock around the clock" a couple of years earlier in the film Blackboard Jungle. Life changed forever at that.

How things have changed. Have a look at the support....could you imagine a penny whistle act warming up for One Direction or Coldplay!
