I'm sure most of you know this, but I didn't until I went to Ardfern to buy a new morse cable today.

Imray are publishing the next generation of CCC pilots, and incorporating a lot of Lawrence's photos/material into them. Only one out - Clyde - so far, but hopefully Kintyre to Ardnamurchan will be out next. More HERE.

I've got the new Clyde one. I've only had one season with a borrowed copy of the old one so I'm not in the best position to compare, but I've no complaints about the new one.

I've escaped unscathed. I tried their really cheap rooms - the ones that each have their own front door onto the carpark - motel / Butlins style. Heating system creaked all night despite the radiator being shut off. Stopped driving at midnight and started again at 0900 so it didn't matter too much - reasonable shower in the morning.

Am I right in thinking that Martin Lawrence was the CCC Sailing Directions editor at one time? Converging the two series seems eminently sensible, though I'll be sticking to my 1936 edition for now. Now, where have Shandon and Mambeg steamer piers got to? And how often does the ferry from Carrick Castle connect with the train at Whistlefield these days?

Martin Lawrence was the editor of the CCC Sailing Directions and left the Editorship to produce his own for Imrays. I thought both different but complimentary in their own way - though I thought - and still think - that CCC SDs are more WCV* friendly in that Martin Lawrence's SDs who tended towards 'here there be dragons', though I'm sure some of you WCES* will poo-poo that idea.

On his retirement of the editorship of the Imray Sds Martin Lawrence approached the Club with a fine gesture of allowing the Club to use his SDs in any way they thought fit, which has obviously resulted in taking (hopefully) the best of both.

I think
most God-fearing sailors would keep away fom Loch Aline if they had read Martin Lawrence's description. Morse cables are pretty old hat now, surely most of us are graduating to Lewis, are we not?

I've never even looked at the Imray directions, let alone used them. I think, though, that the CCC ones were very much dumbed down when they went from the hardback book to the multiple large-format paperbacks, and that may be the same as saying they became more aimed at the virgins.

At the changeover, many of the small anchorages ("Stores:none. Water: at burn.") went oot the windae to be replaced with far more detailed coverage of far fewer places. I get the impression that the level of coverage has been creeping up with successive editions since then.

I'm a grouchy old sod, though, and I really don't like or want a pilot book with aerial photographs and all that guff, for the same reason that I absolutely refuse to use a chartplotter. I like my destinations to be interesting adventures and new discoveries, and for me having photographs ruins the fun. Bah, humbug.

That said, or grumbled, it sounds as if Mr Lawrence made a very kind gesture in suggesting the merger. Well done, that editor.

I'd like to, seriously. Unfortunately I can't make it this year, even to say hello. It's The Boy's birthday today and I'm off to work in Sheffield over the weekend. I'm hoping to slap some antifouling on Jumblie next week and get her in soon after that.

I thought that it was a bit strange to use an aerial photo of Rothesay harbour before the pontoons were fitted - though the text does acknowledge the changes.
