Looks as though there was plenty of wind and the yacht had sails . . .

he seems to have a nice red jacket too.
i notice little thumbs up after your post 5 - 3 against currently.
i pressed one of them but to no apparent avail.
are they for readers or must you be a fully paid up argyleach ?

Anyone should be able to vote once on any post they have not made themselves.

Given that they were only just outside the Oban harbour north entrance, it would surely be possible to sail in, and pick up a mooring? There were two of them on board! And there's loads of scope for moorings to pick in Oban, Kerrera, or even drop the anchor somewhere.

There does seem a strange (to me) attitude to sailing in congested areas though. I remember once sailing into Dunstaffnage (jib only, roller furling type) and straight onto the diesel pontoon, which was empty. Two guys came and tried to tell me off!
I don't recommend everyone do this, but in some circumstances such manoevers work fine. (moderate wind, no tide, minimum other boats moving about).

I wouldn't wish to start a conspiracy theory, but if I click on 'thumbs up', it changes to a tick and a 7, but when I look again it's still 3 - 5.

that was my experience too ( not that i am saying whether i clicked on thumbs "up" or "down" )

I can't help agreeing with Nick's POV but it is always possible that the shout was not initiated as a cry for help by the yacht but by the CG acting on information received. If I had been where they were, and a friendly face had offered me a tow, I feel it would have been churlish to refuse.

Absolutely agree. I have in fact been towed in (not Oban) by the lifeboat myself once when I didn't request it. It would be interesting to find out more about this story.

OK, I understand the cynicism, but "Lives Saved" is very strictly interpreted & will not be used if "People Helped" is more relevant. Check out their stats for yourself if you don't believe me.

Edit; it seems the categories are now "people rescued" or "people assisted" and "Lives saved" hasn't been used for quite some time now.

They refused to release their pump to the CG when we were sinking, in spite of the fact that we could have become cardiac statistics due to stress and purple-faced pumping. (we're in our late 60's)
Now that could have been described as 'lives preserved' with more justification than some previous incidents.
The award, however, goes to the local golfcourse for the loan of it's irrigation pump for a day. (and of course the CG who organised it)

Postscript obviously got her engine fixed, because I saw her heading northwards up the Sound of Mull this afternoon under engine into a brisk north-westerly. I was passing on the Calmac ferry Clansman and they gave us a cheery wave!

No-one, but it would surely be better if they were able to sail confidently enough to avoid calling the lifeboat out just because the engine has stopped.

That level of confidence is unlikely to be attained if you just put the engine on every time conditions are a bit challenging.
