BLUEMOMENT

I've been watching the NOAA site for the last few weeks, for some reason I've become interested in hurricanes. I watched Irene and now I'm watching Katia.

I've never seen this before, but then it may be that I've just never looked, but it seems that Katia is headed our way, and, indeed, will still be classed as a hurricane when it approaches the uk, late on Sunday - it looks as if the worst will be in Scotland.

Now, it's early days, and the track and strength may change, but might be a good idea to move the boat if it's on an exposed mooring?

I should point out that I am just an amateur, and in no way have teh knowledge of people like Simon, so it could be all rubbish,

The Met Office show Katia off the coast of the US on Saturday, but the low to the west of Ireland might cause a bit of a blow.

I thought that a TRS needed warm water to feed it? That's why they develop in the tropics.
Admittedly we do get the leftovers but by the time they have crossed the Atlantic they are getting a bit knackered and get here as a depression, it may be a deep/bad one but not a huricane.

I'm an amateur too so I could be as wrong as wrong comes.

I presume that the remnants of it are battering New York at the moment, disrupting some game in a meadow that is flushing.

This is typical! I'd been promised a week off from sailing on Windermere and a romantic trip to see a volcano in Scotland as well as a ride on a Carousel.

Certainly looks as though it will be rough, but I'd be surprised if it'll be as bad as the hurricane 12 we had in June.

Not so sure looking at tonights forecasts, XC, Passage, Met, etc
Cant make up my mind wheather I should stick HB in Largs or leave her hanging on her mooring at Fairlie bay considering she survived the Westerly storm on 26 may last, and this forecast is for SWies.
What would you do if you were in my position?

The forecast for the Nasty Stuff on the Clyde seems to be SE: by the time it's gone round to the SW it's due to have dropped from 8/9 to 5/6. I have decided to leave Jumblie on her mooring. Port Bannatyne gets a bit bouncy and uncomfortable with wind from E to SE but it's more choppy than violent and from S round to W it's almost perfectly sheltered. I did double check the mooring strop from the dinghy before I left her, though.

In your place I'd ... well I don't know your boat or your mooring, but though I wouldn't be planning a peaceful night on board I wouldn't be unduly worried. Good luck.

I vividly recall a September weekend in the late 70s when the arrival of a decayed tropical storm in Scotland coincided with the Edinburgh JMCS meet to Skye. Camping at the Sligachan involved collapsing tents and general mayhem, and on the way home the bridge (or is it a causeway?) at Dornie was covered in seaweed. The roadsides were decorated with smashed up caravans and not a lot of climbing was done.
