It appears that the Jura passengert ferry will run again this season after Argyll and Bute Council yesterday (2 June 2011) agreed to support the service for the 2011 summer season, with a grant of £24,000.

Twenty four grand subsidy? I wondered how they made any money with only £20 a head each way ticket price, perhaps if it's not financially viable it should be cut.
They were in Tayvallich last (Friday) night and this morning.

Well, here we get into difficult territory. Apply this thinking universally and almost all of the ferry routes would be axed. And the island flights. And the rail routes north of the Central Belt.

More enlightened governments, e.g. in Norway, actively provide low cost transport links to encourage people to live in remote areas.

In any case, £24k of the Cooncil's cash would barely pay for an office junior making the tea.
