Crinan Canal - 2011 Opening Hours
Published: 5th March 2011
The British Waterways Scotland statement:
THE CRINAN CANAL
Proposed Changes to Operations During the Summer Season
The Scottish Parliament has now approved the national budget for April 2011 to April 2012 and we now know that British Waterways Scotland’s own grant in aid will suffer from a significant £1.5m reduction on the current year, or 13%. The organisation will also need to meet the further 3% efficiency savings which the Scottish Government has charged all public bodies with making. Altogether, this means we are entering an extremely challenging year.
With reduced resources available, our utmost priority will be fulfill our core public purpose that of maintaining the two hundred year old infrastructure in safe condition and a navigable route across the waterways. By necessity, we will therefore reduce our seasonal workforce and focus our existing operational resources tightly, particularly on planned preventative maintenance work.
In essence, this means that you may notice a reduction in the frequency of grass and scrub cutting, litter picking and removal of flytipped rubbish. Tree management will also be limited to those works required in the interests of safety.
We may also need to change some of the current bankside services and flexibility we provide. As a regular or potential user of the Crinan Canal, we would like to make you aware of the type of operational changes which we are considering and invite your feedback. This should be directed to Alec Howie, Harbour Master, British Waterways Scotland by telephone on 01546 603210 or by email.
Proposed Service Changes:
Opening Hours
All locks and bridges will open at 9:00am (currently 8:30am) and close at 5:30pm.
Extended Opening Hours
Extended opening hours will be reduced with a last locking time of 7:00pm for a 7:30pm close and be available on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings between Friday 24th June and Sunday 21st August inclusive.
Crinan Bridge
Crinan Bridge will be left open to the canal during opening hours but closed for pedestrians and motorists by request.
