Hello,
i would like to sail from Ireland to Iona. What is the best cruising guide for those Scottish waters? I am ok on the Irish guides.

Martin Lawrence's guides are excellent, as are the Clyde Crusing Club Kintyre to Ardnamurchan SDs, which would give you a bigger spread, including Islay, Jura, Mull, Firth of Lorn etc.

No. You'd need to buy Martin Lawrence's "Clyde to Colonsay" as well. The CCC SDs covers everything from Rathlin Island up to Mull and Iona.

Also, "The East and North coasts of Ireland" by the Irish Sailing Club.
Would be useful to get you around there.

So what's your projected route?
Done the trip several times Donegal to Scotland.

We bought our boat on the Clyde in 05 and sailed her home to Galway -had the pleasure of leaving her in Fanny's Bay between weekends. What a great anchorage.
Coming north from Galway,

Kilronan
Bofin
Broadhaven or Blacksod
arranmore or Teelin then Arranmore
Tory or Downings
Portrush
Portellen....


any recommended anchorages after that?

Was in Clew Bay last year and did Clifden and Aran Islands...

We went to Inisbofin last summer and discovered the wondeful anchorage of Ross Bay in Ballynakill harbour nearby (4 visitor moorings). It felt like sailing into a Paul Henry landscape painting surrounded by absolutely stunning scenery and the anchorage itself (like Fannys bay) absolutely secure. Thoroughly recommended in any westerly blow when Clifden is too open for comfort.

Well, going the directish route from Pt. Ellen to Iona via the Sound of Islay, there are, in order:
some nice good weather anchorages near Ardmore / Kildalton (fine Celtic cross) at the SE corner of Islay;
a wee place reasonably sheltered in most winds behind Heather Island at the E side of the entrance to the Sound;
Bunnahabhainn at the W side of the N entrance (good for W'lies, well in to get out of the worst of the tide);
a range of very fine and remote feeling anchorages with one or more suitable for most wind directions (some with "delicate" approaches, but good transit marks) in Loch Tarbet, Jura;
Oronsay (not in E or S) (Priory ruins, grave slabs, crosses);
Scalascaig on Colonsay (v. limited room for anchoring, 2 alongside berths, handy for pub, but often nasty swell from E);
Tinker's Hole, Erraid (great shelter once in, precise navigation through the rocks essential).

And there are others, e.g. at Rubha Ardalanish, Mull, that are said to be good, but which I've yet to visit (likewise *).

The anchorage off Martyrs' Bay, Iona is not brilliant in poor weather, and for an overnight stop either Tinker's Hole or Bull Hole * would be better, or even round the corner at Bunnessan.

I'll vouch for Ardalanish.
