Stupid battery question

Just got new 12v batteries however when I put the voltmeter across one, it shows 17V, is that OK?

Not even remotely possible.

I expect the battery in your meter is knackered.

Just changed the battery in the voltmeter. One battery is showing 17v the other 18v

Should be looking at about 14.4v with the engine running and about 12.8v without. A very good book on the subject is Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual by Nigel Calder

Suggest that you test your meter on another source - the car battery for instance.

And borrow another meter and compare the readings from both.

Waht sir evidently needs is a more intelligent battery. Stupid batteries are a waste of money. :wink:

no not this yin, this is the one at home not the boat one. I'll have to buy a new 9v for it rather than nick the ones from the smoke detectors

perhaps hes clipped the meter on to the solar panel connections that would read 17v up to 21v??
