They work well if you get one that's man enough to deal with the head of water. The submersible bit is how they keep cool. so if you get one don't run it "slurping " for long periods. I use a car interior light relay to give a wee delay to stop cycling as the pipe empties back. If you use an automatic switch, it's a good idea to put a bleeper in parallel with the pump to create a bilge alarm. That way you get early warning if there's a major catastrophe.
