Spring

Driving home last night I was fascinated by a number of things - which hardly every happens when I'm driving in to work!
The Met office is part of the Ministry of Defence - I probably did know this but it had slipped my mind...like so many things these days.
The Met office want to call March 1st the First Day of Spring whereas Sir Nicholas Winterton wishes it to remain March 21st to coincide with the venereal equinox. Quite fascinating discussion which resulted in me driving past our lane end - so absorbed was I. Anyway apparently the Met office think that working the months into a 3 month grouping is a much simpler way of organising the seasons - and then we wonder why we have climate change!

Why is everyone so surprised

. . . when it snows in Scotland at the beginning of March?
Even lifelong residents have caught a serious dose of unreality from ra meeja. Watched an ancient Aiberdeenshire worthy on TV last night expressing horror and saying it was nae richt. I lived in rural Aberdeenshire for 30 years, and I reckon we always got at least one heavy snowfall in March, and quite often a 'teuchat storm' in April to boot.

When I worked in Aviemore in the very early 70's - the best days skiing I ever had was on April 28th. Big snowfall the night before and then the skies cleared and we had a wonderful day - empty slopes, nae punters and then a hell of a night in the Winking Owl.
Poor owl...

Best I ever had was in 1986, in May. Big fall overnight, I drove up, Elan, roof down, skis in the passenger seat, skiiing all day then drove home in daylight. Sunny, fresh snow, blue skys, fabulous. There were guys on the slopes bare-chested, which was a bit OTT, but they might have been more comfortable than I was in about 18 layers!
We always get snow in March. This is NOT spring, never has been.
BTW, haven't I seen this thread somewhere else?
Ah, the Stinking Fowl

Have you got much snow in PA34 at the moment?
My working party for the weekend has called off with a fractured ankle. The things some people will do to get out of a little bottom-scrubbing! So I'm having second thoughts too. It's just started snowing here and still falling quite heavily.

Well - they say it is lovely there just now - all sunshine and magnolias. Snow on the tops - it'll not snow until next weekend when I get up there.

I'll give you a call later. How far is it to Ardfern? IIRC the CC coincides with the Irvine jumble again this year and I do like a good rummage.
