I'm thinking of moving my boat to Loch Creran to keep her on a swinging mooring. No problem for the summer but my insurance company (Bishop Skinner) only insure moorings at South Shian for the winter months - not the ones at the Marine Resource Centre. Any recommendations for insurers who might cover me?

I know it would be better to take the boat out of the water but keeping her in saves cash.

Fairwinds stayed in at Balvicar a couple of winters ago but I think Nick was with Northern Reef at the time and since they never pay out anyway, they don't feel the need to impose silly restrictions.

As Silkie says, we left fairwinds in over winter one year. Fairwinds came to no harm over the winter even though that was the year of the hurricane up here.


Northern Reef do not have a good reputation, so we are now with Bishop Skinner and keep the boat in the yard over winter.

I can't remember who I'm with, used to be RK-J but my broker (Desmond Cheers got me a better deal. They are happy for me to stay in commision & for solo sailing (but not at night, unless by force majeur)

We're covered for 12 months in commission on a L.Creran mooring with St.Margarets, subject to a mooring inspection/survey if staying afloat beyond October.

Personally there's no way I'd leave her in over winter at the E end of the Loch though: it's well exposed to the winter storms.

Hi John, Elsa is insured for over the winter on a swinging mooring @ Carrick Castle. Markedly increased excess mind. However, that info is no use to you because we're with Bishop Skinner.
Previously we were insured through Noble Marine who also allowed wintering on a swinging mooring, but for about £300 more a year.

Hi Yacht Elsa,

thanks for the reply - still considering my options for mooring for the summer - only two weeks to make up my mind though. Do you know if there are any moorings available at Carrick Castle? Sounds like a really good deal in a lovely location.

One of my options is DRB - could you PM me with how you found it?
