Early Sail This Year

Post by BlowingOldBoots »

Just had a great few days at the beginning of February. A couple of circumnavigations of Luing, twice to Puilladobhrain, Loch Melfort, Kimelford and Melfort Pier. Winds were 14 kts E or ENE gusting 30 to 45 kts at times, weather was mostly fair but cold and some rain at times. Also had a night sail from Puilladhobhrain down the Firth of Lorn and through the Sound of Luing.

Easterly winds make for easy sailing around here, no big waves and usually steady except for the usual wind shadow areas such as the Seil Sound approach to Cuna Sound. Had some good speeds with a comfortable motion and little spray. It was cold outside the spray hood, and it would not take long for the miserableness to set in if poorly dressed. Us old ones did seize up a bit.

It was all "day sailing" out of Craobh with 2 or 3 reefs in the main and well reefed genoa. Wrapping up well was definitely required with many layers needed to keep warm. My MIL always buys me socks for Christmas that claim to be warm and dry in the cold and I have a box full of them. Never been so glad of warm feet, so MILs have their uses.

The nights are getting brighter quite fast now, so get yer glad rags on, get launched and go sailing, even if it is just for a few hours. All in all a very enjoyable plod around my marina's immediate locality.
