This year's was fun but a bit disappointing. The CYCA classes were concatonated into one with Spirit of Jacana a J133 off 4 minutes as scratch boat then all the way to a GK24 off 21 minutes. Any attempt to make a decent start was doomed to being mugged by the larger, faster boats so Marisca just went to the "wrong" end of the line for clear air.
The event needs more slow boats, like the ones you guys sail, to fill the classes. There is a great danger that if the numbers remain low (like they have been all this year) racing for the non-serious, family boats with Dacron sails will disappear with very little, if any, chance of resurrection. The event is fun, the social side energetic, the racing as serious as you want it to be (white sail, if you must) and for a lot of us, a reminder of those halcyon days of carefree youth. So, put it in your diaries and calendars, sign up your family and friends - more than you could possibly need 'cos some will inevitably call off, and take just a tad more care over the anti-fouling this winter. Hope to see you there (if we're spared!)

Apologies if anyone feels I have insulted their fine craft - I was using "slow" to differentiate from the stripped out, carbon masted, black sails, planing hulled, giant dinghies requiring a complete rugby team with matching oilies as crew. The boats I was thinking of have bunks, cookers, water, fuel, pots/pans, a reasonable quantity of alcohol (at the start of the event, anyway), and a crew who sleep on board.
