Celtic Sea Stories, George W MacPherson

This is a wee gem of a book I picked up in Oban's Waterstones. The author has gathered many verbal stories from the highlands and islands and written them down. In some instances he quotes the sources of these stories, some have multiple sources, but in many instances the story teller did not want their names to be known, so have remained anonymous. There are many land based stories as well, so not all about the sea. Basically, if the theme of the book was Philip Kaufman's 1979 film, The Wanderers, you defiantly don't want to flip with the Little People (aka The Foreman Baldies). Basically, good people who do well, then offend the little people, come undone. It's really an enjoyable read, a book that you can dip in an out at your will, all of the stories are very interesting.
I was narrating one of the stories to my good lady and she told me one of her own. Her and her sister, young girls, where playing near a path in the Scottish borders village they grew up in. She said that a little person appeared on the path, dressed all in red and wearing a hat, picking up stuff. She told her Mum and Dad who refused to believe her and her sister. When I was young I used to visit the Isle of Man, where my Uncle was Light House Keeper for the Calf of Man and Chicken Rock Light houses. We were driving round the island and as we approached the Fairy Bridge, my uncle said, you must say good morning to The Fairies as you cross the bridge, which we all did. When I queried why, it was because they took offence at being ignored and bad luck would follow those who did not respect them.
Be nice to the little people.
