BLUEMOMENT

Heard today from the CCC - at the age of 83 years. I have never met the man but I feel I knew him from his descriptions of places I have ventured and rocks he warned me about but I managed to ignore. I certainly owe him a debt of gratitude - may his anchorage be peaceful.

in the CCC post I was surprised just how long ago he left the Club. You'd have thought that given his contribution, he'd have been made a honorary member.

RIP, we owe him a great deal.

Friends of ours in Portugal have his old boat. They are currently in or on their way to the Balearics.

My understanding of the story is that he was heavily involved in the production of the Sailing Directions but left the CCC in order to publish his own sailing directions with information that was taken from the CCCs own publications, but written in his own style.

The fact that he left the CCC in order to publish his own SDs didn't go down at all well.

I can imagine it did. When his came out it was breath of fresh air with colour chartlets, overhead photographs and line of sight photographs showing pilotage information, some times with a useful arrow guiding the user to avoid dangers. They were superior in every way to the CCC directions of the day. We owe him a lot for that vision.

No bones to pick, but he got up a lot of CCC members noses, especially if you believe he visited all those anchorages and wrote the directions.

Before my time but he basically 'borrowed' member's collective information gathered over many years, made it better, and sold it.

As I say no bones to pick as I have both sets of sailing directions on board.
