Thanks Geoff, very good of you to organise all of this for everyone. I will be collecting my chain from the boat this weekend while I am up there checking what Abigail has done to her. I will try to get it to Cumbernauld one morning next week. I assume that if I just say to the guys 'Geoff sent me' they will known what to do with it.

Technical question - my 10 kg Bruce has been my spare and the galvanize might be in fair nick, but this deal is too good to miss - will this new galvanise add on to the existing, increasing thickness, or does the preparation process strip off the existing?

Galvanizing is an alloying reaction between iron and zinc, (as opposed to a paint like coating that just covers something), so the molten zinc has to have access to iron (steel). The steel exposed must be chemically clean, free of oxides (rust etc)
Fortunately from this viewpoint, the cleaning process that cleans the steel, also removes residual galvanizing.

So you get any old galv stripped off and a new coating entirely.
Dipping old galv into molten zinc merely heats the item, doesn't coat it. The coating doesn't exist where it hasn't been able to alloy to steel.

You don't need to do anything about this, it happens anyway.
Under normal ordering though, you'd get an extra charge for "stripping" - the removal of old galv, coz in fact that consumes acid, which costs something.
In this special case, I've assume that all we get might have some element of old galv left to some degree or other.

Anybody ever asked for a colour to be added to an anchor chain? that could be fun.

I could be sitting in wizards pool with a nice yellow chain over my bow, then another boat would come in with a similar thing going on and in the words of Arlo Guthrie they would think it was the start of a movement and everybody would want one

I now have a very short shopping list but I suspect these are not going to be needed in sufficient quantity to make a difference but here goes:

Paddlewheel log - probably NASA Clipper

On the Wish List but unlikely to be bought at anything like list prices:

Radar enhancer - Echomax or Seeme.
Active AIS - make uncertain but Standard Horizon is a current favourite.

Is anyone else thinking of similar electronic items? It's possible a large order for assorted electronics might attract a worthwhile discount.

I've got a "spare" one in my garage. The reason being that I wanted a GPS repeater, and I only have room for 2 instruments, so I changed the log & depth for a duet. I haven't got the through-hull though, as I've used that, but they can be bought as a seperate item. I've also got the correct size hole saw, as they are a bit difficult to come by, and you'd be welcome to borrow it. It's only cut 2 holes - One of which was in a lump of ply as a test!

No problem.
The lead isn't a problem for us though. We have lead in there anyway - about 1% in solution (dissolved in the zinc) and perhaps 50mm deep sitting on the bottom of the kettle. That's normal practice in the industry. So the lead won't worry the galv process, but might cause your anchor to set less well being less heavy on the tip. Lead is about 19kg/litre, Zinc about kg/litre.
