With due respect Webbie, you're trumpeting out yer arse. Altering course early is completely within the CR and is IMHO sensible. FWIW I thhought the wording of the question made it a stupid question ... how can an early alteration of course to avoid a close quarters situation be contrary to CR .. it per se complies .. It may add time to your voyage .. but hey that's a different issue!

If you had any 'due respect' - not a quality you have ever been noted for on here or elsewhere - you would not have mentioned arse trumpeting; rather you would rather have attempted to engage me in a rational discussion as you convincingly and rationally explained your point.

Just because someone else thinks that you are wrong doesn't mean that you are, does it? You are alive & posting, so that means you haven't done anything too dangerous have you?

I too am of the "Nina" persuasion. Wood gives way to glassfibre & glassfibre gives way to steel . . . I pass astern of anything big & commercial that looks like it is holding its bearing & I change course, by about 20-30deg, when still around a mile away.

Just as I would run if I was on a zebra crossing & the bus wasn't slowing down in good time. It's called self-preservation.

If you are less than a mile away and the vessel is still on a steady bearing then I think it is appropriate to alter course and I would usually do the same if my current course looked like crossing close ahead of the vessel.

We were talking about altering course more than two miles away, when you still can't be sure whether the give way vessel has commenced a manoevre that will take her clear of you, and when she does in fact still have plenty of time to do so.

I'll have to get a new pair of specs then, I doubt I could see many ships at 2 miles or more & I would definitely be pretty hard pushed to know which way they were going.

Please accept my sincere apologies. I certainly wouldn't have attempted a humorous remark of that ilk if I'd known that the brains of the family were out of the country.

TOP just makes me sad now. There only seems to be about a dozen posters who have pretty much driven the last vestige of fun from the place. I spoke to Richard at libs and they do seem rather concerned about the direction their forum has gone. As well as full circle, I too received a stern warning after I posted a message of concern to a contributor who seems to have rather jaded views of the police. Like FC I have currently walked away.

The sailing forums have damaged friendships with people who boat locally to us, I don't like that and would I think, prefer to live in blissful ignorance of said people's bigotry and bile... thus I am re-evaluating internet forums altogether.
