Varnish

Post by Clyde_Wanderer »

Been sanding down the dinnette table top which is some kind of marine ply, I have applied some coats of International Yacht, (non marine) (:?) clear gloss varnish which I intend fine sanding after a few days.
What would the forum recommend as a good hard gloss varnish that can withstand much abuse from hot crockery and much banging from tumbler bottoms especially after they have been filled and emptied many times and the users arms are getting heavier each time?
Thanks, C_W

I can't remember what manufacture of varnish I used - a fairly good quality IIRC - it has stood up very well - since preseason 2004 but we are fairly good at using table mats.

I would stay away from a gloss finish on large surfaces - I think that a satin finish looks much bettter.

I spent a long time sanding and varnishing until I got the skating rink look on the table in the last boat. then "stuff" started to happen, and I realised I had wasted my time. Le Tonkinoise was too soft... Try floor varnish!!

thats not as hard as you think. If not epifaines and re-do from time to time then for a table use a 2 component international epoxy varnish, thats very tough & should last for many years on a hard used table
