MADEIRA ARCHIPELAGO

NOTES

With the opening of several new marinas the situation in Madeira is changing rapidly.

Fairwinds visited Porto Santo and Quinta do Lorde in November 2006, and in addition we visited the other three marinas in Calheta, Baixa de Lugar and Funchal by road.

This information was accurate as of November 2006, but the usual disclaimers apply - not to be used for navigation etc. If anyone has any corrections or observations to add then we would like to hear from you - you can use this FEEDBACK FORM

The opening of the new marinas in Madeira - with plenty of surplus capacity - means that this will surely become a 'must visit' for the average Atlantic circuiter - it is a spectacular island which richly rewards inland exploration by car or bus. The human landscape is quite unique - Madeira is the most densely populated rural area in the world, with one of the most convoluted landscapes in the world - an interesting mixture.

If you are into walking then the unique levadas (irrigation channels through the mountains) provide easy routes into some of the most spectacular mountain scenery you will see anywhere, while others may prefer to visit the amazing botanical gardens, take a cable car up to and a sledge ride down from Monte, or just sit in a pavement cafe in the elegant centre of Funchal and watch the world go by.
